Nuage - Collective Housing
Tulane University, 2019Nuage is an investigation in urban densification through collaboration, emphasizing cooperative organizational structures without dictating lifestyles. The project introduces adaptable living methods, positioning the community as both a resource and a platform for living, thereby redefining public and private boundaries to foster a more interconnected community fabric. The ecological dimension of the project is anchored in its modular design, which incorporates a comprehensive water management system featuring canals and water retention roofs across the site. This system is designed to utilize rainwater for irrigation and to mitigate flooding, complemented by strategically placed gardens that enhance water management and provide natural cooling. This modular approach also offers flexibility in managing water resources and other factors during its development and implementation phases.
The investigation addresses complex housing challenges through a strategy of urban densification. By transforming a single lot from 15 homes to 95 units, the project advocates for mixed-income housing, transcending income and property boundaries to promote a unified community ethos. This approach underscores the importance of communal living as a cornerstone of contemporary urban cooperation, setting a precedent for future developments and on urban densification to counteract sprawl. By proposing a unified housing solution close to the city center, the project seeks to rejuvenate urban life and foster a more cohesive, yet diverse cityscape.
