The Future of the Office is not an Office
Tulane University Integrated Studio (NAAB), 2020(Proposed before the COVID-19 pandemic) The trend of working from home has steadily gained traction, with remote work becoming a viable and often preferred option for many businesses. The ability to communicate and collaborate from any location worldwide has paved the way for a shift towards distance working. Should this trend persist, leading to an increased reliance on virtual connections, the traditional office building as we know it may become redundant. This raises the question: what new purposes could these structures serve? Adapting them for a variety of potential future uses is essential for the ongoing development of urban environments and the well-being of their residents. This proposal introduces a building design that is flexible enough to transition into apartments, public entertainment venues, retail spaces, or any other function that might be deemed suitable in the future.
The Prospect New Orleans Headquarters, located in the French Quarter, is a response to the growing trend of virtual workplaces. Drawing inspiration from the characteristic lateral entrances prevalent in the French Quarter, the design divides the building into three separate entities. These independent structures are constructed using dry construction techniques, allowing for maximum flexibility in adjusting their density, shape, and purpose over time. Thus, what is today an office could tomorrow transform into an apartment, gallery, retail store, storage unit, or any number of other possibilities.
